I agree with you Willa. Noa is a scientist ! and this is his and our way to work on these methods with our instruments. And now with the minicamps we can repeat and repeat and try different approaches on a continuos way (not only during one month of course). I am also extremely happy to be in this community of very serious and very kind musicians .

Thanks to Noa and to all the group.

I practice at different times in the day, mainly in the morning because I am plenty of energy and in the afternoon 1 or 1,5 hours after the pause of swimming or whatever. Time ago I was too tired for practicing before going to bed BUT after reading one presentation of Noa on the subject , I decided to try even only 15 minutes of something difficult for me, a short passage. This is effective!!!

Since maybe 2 months I have got the “ritual” of playing before going into bed, sometimes one hour!!!! Without metronome or timer, without big exigences but those difficult passages that I was working on during the day, inerleaved. I particularly enjoy this “night session” because my music room is dark and the guitar smells so good…there is not pressure…AND it is effective.

Now I will incorporate a short mental training before falling sleep…..🎵 🎵 ….🎵🎵….🛌

Hi Stephen and all the community,

I have read it also, it was my first contact with the concept that “Talent” can be learned or at least we can be built it working on. I have read it before I met Noa page just looking online for serious discussions on this issue. If I remember correctly the concept of the Brazil soccer players , it has something to do with “interleaved” learning, the fact of “being more often in contact with the ball”, makes the session of practicing or learning more effective. I am not sure if this was written in the book, said by Noa or just my own appreciation ????.

Now I am reading a recommendation of Noa also , namely, “Mastery” of George Leonard . The concepts and processes described there help me to really understand also what is happening inside my self and I have found in a lot of passages facts to which I fell completely identify.

    Thanks for the comments.

    Nora

  • Hi , I use the ProMetronom in my iPhone and it is great . Also for Guitar players , “GuitarAt Sight” during long flys or waiting time , you can practice the name of the notes for instance in the higher frets (which octave ?????) and you have to be very quick ! It is fun and very didactic !

    Nora

  • Hi Stephen and Michelle,

According to your commentary that the tool takes also “wrong” information , I thought , I could not use that tool ! And the experience of Michelle was really bad . It seems such a tool can bring you more problems that a help. The big known problem of internet “quality “ !!!!

    Interesting anyhow.

A little late but I want to give you the feedback of my WOOP of last week . It worked extremely gut ! I have changed the distribution of my daily time with the music after suggestion of my teacher. I am playing again the beautiful prelude BWV998 (a few more lines each day…or repeating what I did the day before, always enjoying the incredible music of my friend JSB), and learning two new pieces. It works perfect.

BUT the slurs of Piazzolla are not yet consistently gut. This week I insist with my WOOK of week 13 th march. Only 5 min per day of those slurs. Don’t forget Nora!

Feedback of last minute –> my slurs are better, but not prefect YET. I will continue with the daily 5 minutes because I feel they are improving.

    New WOOP:

Wish –> to begin learning two more pieces in my daily schedule AND to bring again in my fingers BWV998 Prelude.

Outcome–> great feeling and having fun preparing my repertoire

Obstacle–> not to be strict enough with the time dedicated to each piece

PLan–> to fix a tentative time to each piece but according to the difficulties being flexible on the distribution of the time (I am not sure if this is possible but should be !!!!)

Last week WOOP was really good!I have not only written my plan but it was very useful, with limited repetitions , very concentrated, slow enough to think in each finger.

    New WOOP:

Wish–< that the slurs of Piazzolla sound clear and nice. I will dedicate 5 minutes each day only to these two slurs.

Outcome–< to hear a nice beginning of the piece..like a “bandoneon”

Obstacle–> that my fingers are not quick and precise enough…

Plan–> I will continue exercising until IT WORKS ????

Update of last week WOOP :

My wish was not 100% reality BUT I did improve a lot, a lot of times it is correct at tempo, but not 90% of the times. Considering that there is also a new fingering in those bars….I am happy with the result, I will continue practicing these bars slowly . And I am looking forward to hearing the suggestions of Molly to change “bad habits” or “old fingerings”.

    WOOP for 6th march week:

WISH: to write ( and follow !!!) tomorrow a plan of study of the complete Guiliani op 107 (Thema and 6 variations) for the next 5 weeks.

OUTCOME: very happy if I realize that the plan works good (time invested and results)

OBSTACLE: I find difficult to decide how many repetitions (slow? tempo?) or how long for each variation, interleaved but how…etcetc.

PLAN: In case my plan is not “viable” or very confusing I will discussed the issues next week with my teacher after having worked one week on it as conceived tomorrow.

My wish for this week is to achieve playing a difficult passage ( of Variation V4 Giuliani OP107), 3 bars at the final tempo of 88-90.

Outcome–>The evaluation will be 9 of 10 times played should be OK.

Obstacle–> internal doubt of being able to achieve in one week.

Plan—> if it seems to difficult after two days , I will reduce the wished tempo to 80.

I was confuse with some concepts of the WOOP:

      Wish–> the same

Outcome–> I will feel I am progressing in this piece and that my methods of learning are coming more effective and quickler

Obstacle–> my learning capacity is not so quick? or may be is more a doubt…

Plan–> if I do not reach that speed I will continue trying with the confidence that it is only a matter of time

Thanks Noa. In fact I was increasing the time to 10 minutes instead of thinking on the tension. Good point. Is is good that you orientes me on how to define the obstacles …still a little difficult for me.

Yes….where to replay is also confusing for me…I have send you a photo of the first page on the dialogs of our first contact here in the discussions of WOOP 6th march.

You are write, JW is slightly different…I play it like Pepe (I think) and I love his version also…but JW is like….with more feelings …the story of JW is like more deep for me. Anyway both are great!!!

I have an old edition Celeste, my teacher gave me this and I find it a beautiful music and a challenge for my level. And I am working on it since June 2022…I am quite slow learning…and high ambitions!!!! ( to play like John Williams ????). Far far away,,, of course….but he is my inspiration…My objective is to work on it until June 2023 and BASTA. I do not have concerts, like an amateur…but I want to have a nice recording of it for me , only the sound, not a video…to hear later the music in the living room with our great sound …how to say it..well you know… Noa will give us ideas how to meet…we could use also Skipe….see you soon !!!????. I have a clear fingering now of both hands after several changes….

I have just used that suggestion of Duke Noa. In fact my teacher uses that formule, but for me until now was not so useful because I stayed doing delibarate practice here and there and the timer was running…and finally I did not know in which repetition I was and 30 minutes were over, etc.

BUT this week I did a plan (WOOP) and it is working extremely good in the administration of time and results I think….. I am sure my teacher will be happy when I tell him next week about this plan…????

    Hi Anne,

I will also prepare a practice and performance plan tomorrow and your beginning is inspiring : “WHY ” I want to practice that and I add “HOW” should sound this.

I wish you a succesfully week!

  • I am looking forward to hearing your experience with Dolly method . I have tried once time ago and it was really good that day I did it but the next day was not in the long memory…and it takes quite a long time (in my hands) to repeat it let’s say 3 times a day ? I am not a professional like Molly , she was really impressed by the efficiency of the method . May be she will talk about this next week ! Good plan ????Rita

  • Thanks Noa. That is exactly the obstacle and your plan options are very appropriate d for me also. ☺️

There's an LIVE component too! (for educators)

If you’d like to explore some of the most essential skills and techniques in the course live, with a cohort of curious, thoughtful, supportive, and like-minded educators (and a few mildly irreverent or benevolently sarcastic folks mixed in to make sure we don’t get too serious), that’s also an option!

Starting Thursday, February 3rd, we’ll meet via Zoom once a week, and go through selected strategies related to effective practice, managing nerves, and achieving flow states under pressure. We’ll do some in-class playing experiments (don’t worry – you’ll be muted!), short weekly homework assignments, and small-group breakout sessions to help you integrate these new skills into your teaching.

This 6-week live course is normally $199, but is available at 50% off the regular cost when bundled with Beyond Practicing. For more details about the live course (and dates) CLICK HERE.
