This really helps me reframe things. It sounds like it’s more about maintaining attention than some sort of ratio. So a long break can be good if it makes for more attentive (and therefore effective) practicing, while the same length could be bad if it means you come back to a session foggy.

Structuring distributed practice + breaks

Hi everyone! Really enjoying the course so far.

Technical question here–does anyone else have trouble integrating the course’s section on distributed practice with the podcast episodes on breaks and rest?

Here’s what I mean: It seems like it may be best to break practice into small half-hour chunks rather than marathon 90-minute sessions. Seems straightforward enough. But then Noa’s insights on breaks (off the top of my head) include one study where it was found that longer breaks between practise sessions could actually harm retention. There was another that said the most productive employees work for about 45 minutes and rest for about 15, which seems like a pretty short break.

I’m in a good position with practice right now. I can usually make 2-4 hours per day. What I’m wondering right now is how to structure this time into smaller chunks rather than blocks with the right length of breaks in between.

For example, should it be–

Morning: 45 minutes on, 15 minute break,…
