Thank you enormously for the reply!

I noticed that under pressure it is harder to let go when focusing on pulse when there is a series of fast passages. I do record these passages as the first thing in the morning with increased heart-rate, but it still feels different to the feeling of performing for people, so i end up focusing on the character of each individual passage.

I also noticed the tendency to shut off for a split second, because of which i end up playing wrong text on a piece which i’ve been constantly working on and feel confident. Could this be caused by fatigue from over-preparing things? (I’ve never experienced something like this before) I have an audition in less than a week. Could you perhaps provide me some ideas on how to spend the last days before the audition, so i stay in shape but also maintain the energy and focus?

I’m very grateful for your help!

Thank You ennormously! I tried Jason’s approach and so far it is working pretty well, however there’s this feeling of missing out on slow practice to make sure my mechanincs are correct. So i plan doing this: let’s say there are 3 passages i’m working on. So in the first day i would practice them slowly with correct movements and structure them in a way that i do interleaved practice. And then on the second day i would use the Jason’s method to speed things up.

I am grateful enormously! It definitely makes more sence to focus on getting used to the performance situation. I believe this will help to develop a better big picture of the pieces.

One performance is in 26 days from now, and the other is 1 month and 1 week from now.

Thank you for your help! Yes, i’ve tried this approach, and it seems to help when there’s a shorter fast run (easier to keep the focus going on while practicing). Most of the time, i’m working on passages from older pieces, so i am sort of fixing the pathways. There’s always a big question – when do i practice slow, and when do i try Jason’s method. Or is there no difference to this?

There's an LIVE component too! (for educators)

If you’d like to explore some of the most essential skills and techniques in the course live, with a cohort of curious, thoughtful, supportive, and like-minded educators (and a few mildly irreverent or benevolently sarcastic folks mixed in to make sure we don’t get too serious), that’s also an option!

Starting Thursday, February 3rd, we’ll meet via Zoom once a week, and go through selected strategies related to effective practice, managing nerves, and achieving flow states under pressure. We’ll do some in-class playing experiments (don’t worry – you’ll be muted!), short weekly homework assignments, and small-group breakout sessions to help you integrate these new skills into your teaching.

This 6-week live course is normally $199, but is available at 50% off the regular cost when bundled with Beyond Practicing. For more details about the live course (and dates) CLICK HERE.
