Where Should I Begin?

Validating and interpreting your mental skills profile

You will probably find that the scores fit your experience pretty darn closely. But in some cases, they may be a little off, as your scores can shift one way or the other depending on what you were thinking about when you answered the questions. In other words, did you answer the questions while thinking about auditions, or performances? Recent performances, or performances from long ago? This can sometimes shift the profile one way or the other.

Feel free to take a pen or pencil and adjust the scores slightly to better fit your experience.

Be sure to save the printed copy in a safe place! This way you will have a basis for comparison when you take the PSI again in a month or two.

Where to begin?

Ok! I hope that in the course of establishing your performance and psychological baselines, you discovered something from each area that you weren’t fully aware of before. Now, with a clearer idea of where you are and what to work on, it’s time to dive into the skill lessons and begin developing your mental skills!

I recommend going through the skills in numerical order, but technically there’s nothing stopping you from working on the skills out of sequence.

If, for instance, you have a big audition or performance coming up and don’t have time to go through the entire course, you could begin with the skills that represent your lowest scores on the PSI. As a rule of thumb, anything below 70 could use some work, and anything in the 20’s or 30’s is holding you back quite a bit. The goal is to eventually see most of your scores in the high 80’s and 90’s.

Either way, expect to spend ~2 weeks working through each skill lesson, and plan to make a new performance recording every week or two to see how things are coming along.

Performing (or mock performances) as a regular part of your preparation will help cement these skills into place and make them a more deeply ingrained part of your performing habits.
