Establish a Performance Baseline
Our first task will be to establish a baseline (or at least an approximation) of how you currently perform under pressure. There are two ways to do this:
Option #1: YES, I have a recent performance video
If you have a video recording of a recent performance, flip to the Performance Evaluation Worksheet in the Quick Start Guide, and complete the worksheet based on this recent performance (and yes, you can review the recording first if you’d like to refresh your memory).
Does it absolutely have to be a video recording? Well, no; an audio recording can work too, but video will help you pick up on a lot of helpful information, like tension and body language, that you might otherwise not be aware of.
When you’re all done, click ahead to the next lesson to take the PSI and discover your mental strengths and weaknesses.
Option #2: NO, I do not have a recent performance video
If you don’t have a video recording of a recent performance, that’s no problem. You can just make one.
You just need a few contrasting excerpts of music (5-10 minutes or so should do), a friend or colleague to make you a little nervous, and a recording device to capture the moment.
Of course, right about now there’s probably a voice in your head trying to think up an excuse for why you should put this off until tomorrow, or next Tuesday, or to skip it altogether. Pay no mind to the voice; just record whatever you have, even if you feel like there’s nothing in your repertoire that is performance-ready at the moment.
When you’ve finished your performance, flip to the Performance Evaluation Worksheet in your Quick Start Guide, and fill it out.
All done? Ok, and now the moment you’ve been waiting for. It’s time to take the Performance Skills Inventory (PSI) and see your mental strengths and weaknesses.
