    Hi Luis,

I am a violinist, but I am curious if the methods I use would translate to a guitar. Generally, in my opinion, if left hand knows the note sequence well enough, moving the tempo should not be a problem. Many times I had very surprised students who were able to play a certain passage up to speed in lesson although they “have never played it fast before”. Sometimes I suggest that they play a portion of a piece/passage, etc… “as fast as the can” – sort of running downhill/wind in your hair feel and see what happens. When they trip up, we analyze: did you overthink or did your fingers were not sure where to go or something else. Depending on the answer we decide on a best way to address it. I also use slow -faster-even faster-fast-slow-slow structure to gradually move the tempo but always finish on slow to reemphasize the correct mechanics in the left hand. I hope this helps!

There's an LIVE component too! (for educators)

If you’d like to explore some of the most essential skills and techniques in the course live, with a cohort of curious, thoughtful, supportive, and like-minded educators (and a few mildly irreverent or benevolently sarcastic folks mixed in to make sure we don’t get too serious), that’s also an option!

Starting Thursday, February 3rd, we’ll meet via Zoom once a week, and go through selected strategies related to effective practice, managing nerves, and achieving flow states under pressure. We’ll do some in-class playing experiments (don’t worry – you’ll be muted!), short weekly homework assignments, and small-group breakout sessions to help you integrate these new skills into your teaching.

This 6-week live course is normally $199, but is available at 50% off the regular cost when bundled with Beyond Practicing. For more details about the live course (and dates) CLICK HERE.
