My sleep is pretty erratic. I’m sure that makes things far worse, and it’s something I’m trying to improve. In grade school my mother was told by my teacher that I was a daydreamer. I specifically remember this because I was young enough that I had to ask how one could dream while awake.
Yeah, if the pressure is on or I’m engaged, then I can stay focused for longer stretches. A good example is mathematics was a chore when I was in high school, yet I found music theory compelling. I studied it constantly and by the time I took my freshman theory placement exam in college, I finished the test with an hour left to spare and was told to go straight into 3rd semester theory/comp; conversely, on my SAT exams, I found myself struggling and running short on time in nearly every section.
I suppose the best thing to do is seek an evaluation by a Dr. who specializes in this area and go from there.
By the way, I played a gig recently where 40 minutes into the set I made a minor flub. For a millisecond, due to the importance of the show, I almost went into my prior self-destructive thought processes, but instead, “there will be plenty of time to think about that later” flashed through my mind, and I was free; it was as if the mistake didn’t even happen. In that brief moment it all instantaneously clicked, and I got back to the business at hand. That liberating experience alone was worth the price of the course.
Thanks for the info and the program!
